DPTI Brochure: “Avoid a downhill disaster”
Dec 15, 2014
DPTI 8 December 2014. DPTI issued the attached brochure with the following email message:
"On 18 August 2014, a fatal crash occurred at the intersection at the bottom of the South Eastern Freeway in Adelaide involving an out of control truck.
As a result, I am writing to remind all truck and bus drivers have a legal responsibility to comply with Australian Road Rule 108 when driving down a steep road. That is, you must use a low enough gear to limit the speed of the vehicle without using the primary (foot) brake.
Please see attached for a copy of the brochure explaining this law and the serious consequences that follow if drivers do not comply.
Please read this information carefully and consider the risks. Never attempt to drive a vehicle if you are not familiar with its braking systems and controls.
Yours sincerely
Paul Gelston
Acting General Manager, Operational Services"
